After Hours Tuesday: Northern Classics

by markjohnson on February 25, 2015

Tuesdays at 7PM:

Join Philip McKenzie for three hours of classical music with a theme on Northern Classics, a Pioneer 90.1 Original.

About the show

Each week a theme ties together a selection of music geared toward those who don’t listen to classical music all that often and are interested in learning just a little bit about the music, the composers, and the events in the world happening at the same time.

Phil always welcomes ideas for themes and music and performers. E-mail your thoughts on the form below. Start a dialogue and, literally, be heard!

About Phil

Phil grew up in Crookston, MN, getting his first taste of broadcasting as a high school student bringing jazz albums – Chick Corea, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock – over to the college station at UMC to get on to a friend’s weekly show. While attending the University of North Dakota he applied work study hours to a Saturday morning show at KFJM-FM on campus.

While at UND he commuted to Winnipeg to study oboe and eventually landed a job with the Virginia Symphony. The freelancing and teaching that accompanied the regular playing weren’t enough to hold him to the career however so after seven years he packed up his oboe and found his way back to the midwest for business school at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

He’s been back in the region for over a decade and is excited to share his passion for the best music written over the past 300 years.
