Arts Calendar

• “Blues on the Red”, an annual series of concerts at the Town Square in downtown Grand Forks, opens up this weekend, Saturday the 28th at 6:00 pm. The opening act is the “Cole Allen Band”, followed by the “Mooseknuckle Brothers.” Blues on the Red also includes food vending. The concerts continue the fourth Saturday in July and August.

• The North Dakota Museum of Art is holding a number of weekly “Art Camps” this summer. The next camp is Tuesday, June 30th. All classes take place at the Hughes Fine Arts Building on the UND campus in Grand Forks.

• The 37th Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival and the Midwest Viking Festival will take place Friday, June 27th, and Saturday, June 28th, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days, at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead, MN – presented by Nordic Culture Clubs and the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County.

• A romantic comedy called “String” will be performed by the Warroad Summer Theater, Thursday, June 26th through Sunday June 29th. Curtain time is 7:30 Thursday through Saturday, with a 2:00 pm matinee on Sunday at the Warroad High School.

• The 125th Birthday celebration of Kennedy, Minnesota is this weekend, Friday through Saturday. On Friday the 27th events include; a quilt show, photo art show and a dunk tank. Saturday’s activities include; horse rides and games for children, volleyball tournament, and a parade at 1:30, car and tractor show, a Fireman’s supper and street dance.

• “Heritage Days” are being held this weekend in Lancaster, Minnesota – Friday through Sunday, to include games, ethnic foods, a street dance and a frog jumping contest.

• The Greater Grand Forks Fair runs this weekend through Sunday.

• Roseau’s “Scandinavian Festival” is Friday, June 20th and Saturday, June 21st. Events include the “Wilcox family Fiddlers” at 7 pm Friday at the Roseau School Theater. Saturday, there’s a full day of activities including a pancake breakfast from 8 until 10 at the Four Seasons Center. Artists, crafters and vendors will be in and around the Roseau City Center all day. A story called the “Immigrants Tale” will be given by Ole Oleson and Roger Hellsveg at the library…“Music on the Patio” starts at 11 am, featuring Willow Creek, Jody Kirkeide, the Lubben Brothers and the Overtones. And a “Scandinavian Smorgasbord” will be served Saturday evening from 5 until 7 pm at the Roseau City Center.

• The 8th season of the summer Art & Wine Walk, co-sponsored by the Downtown Development Association and the North Valley Arts Council, is Saturday, June 21st. This annual adult event is held in the downtown areas of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. The two starting locations are the Guest House Town House hotel in Grand Forks and the Blue Moose Bar & Grill in East Grand Forks.

• Fisher’s Landing Day is Saturday, June 21st in Fisher, Minnesota. The day starts off with a pancake breakfast at Fisher Lutheran Church. The gate will open at noon with a medallion hunt; Piles of Smiles face painting & balloon artistry, carnival games, and a petting zoo and the “corn hole” tournament is back for a second year! The “Downtown Horns” will provide music from 8:00pm until 1:00am. Admissions for Fisher’s Landing Day are five dollars and children 5 and under are free.

• “Polish Day” is being celebrated in Florian, Minnesota this Sunday, June 22nd. Events include a “Polka Mass” at the Assumption Church at 10:30, featuring the Kathy Erickson Band. Other activities include a polish dinner from 11:30 until 1, polish dancers, music from the Chmielewski Fun Time Band, a clown and conversation. Polish Day is this Sunday in Florian.

• Minnesota singer “Barbara Jean” will perform next Tuesday evening, June 24th at the North Dakota Museum of Art (NDMOA) in Grand Forks. It’s the first in their 2014 “Concert in the Garden” series. An evening meal will be available before the concert. For information – ndmoa.com or 701-777-4195.

“Kickin’ up Kountry” continues its run Thursday June 12th through Saturday, June 14th at the Wagon Wheel Ridge in Karlstad, Minnesota. Stage performers include; Aaron Tippin. Gene Watson, Sawyer Brown, Shenandoah and Highway 101’s Paulette Carlson.

The Warroad Summer Theater presents “Love, Sex and the IRS”, Thursday, June 12th through Sunday, June 15th at the Warroad High School. Curtain time is 7:30 Thursday through Saturday, with a 2:00 pm matinee on Sunday, the 15th.
The 2014 “Grand Cities Art Fest” kicks off on Saturday, June 14th and Sunday June 15th. Over 150 artisans and crafters will fill downtown Grand Forks and East Grand Forks offering everything from handmade jewelry and clothing to pottery and wooden furniture. There will also be live music and dozens of food vendors. The event is Free & Open to the Public this Saturday, June 14th & Sunday, June 15th.

“Arts Calendar”
May 7th through May 11th

On Saturday, May 10th at 8:00 pm a performance of the “Orange Mighty Trio” will be held at the Empire Arts Center in downtown Grand Forks. The Orange Mighty Trio plays their own special brand of “hybrid” chamber music, containing fiddle and jazz.

The Ada-Borup Spring Choir Concert will be held on Tuesday, May 13th at 7:30PM in the ABHS auditorium. This event features the Middle Choir, Girls Middle Swing Choir and Senior High Concert Choir. Vocal awards will also be handed out at this event. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Nordic Culture Club is bringing a day of Scandinavian fun to the region on May 17th at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead. May 17th is Norway’s Constitution Day, called Syttende Mai, and the celebration includes the Nordic Footprints 5k Walk/Run in the morning followed by food and games. The food includes a hot dog wrapped in lefse! That’s Monday, May 17th at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead. All proceeds support the Scandinavian Hjemkomst Festival in June at6 the center.

Norwegian Independence Week in Thief River Falls includes:

Monday, May 12th: “Nordic Sound: Twenty Fingers Speak” with a Norwegian pianist and a Finish accordionist.

Tuesday, May 13th: A presentation on “Norwegian Jews during WWII.

Wednesday, May 14th: Syttende Mai Dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church – TRF

Thursday, May 15th: “Old Time Dance” with the Cathy Erickson Band and the “NorSweDane” dancers from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Eagles Hall in TRF.

Friday, May 16th: Gordy Lindquist, pianist at Northland.

Saturday, May 17th: “Norwegian Home & Cultural Arts, with weaving, carving, Rosemaling, knitting and more at 2:00 p.m. in the TR Care Center.

April 30th through May 4th

• An evening of listening and dancing to music will be featured at the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus, Saturday evening, May 3rd from 8 to 10 pm. The Crookston Jazz Band, under the direction of TJ Chapman, will play music from the swing era, along with pieces from the Duke Ellington and Count Basie libraries, in Bede Ballroom, Sergeant Student Center at UMC. That’s Saturday, May 3rd from 8 to 10 p.m. everyone is welcome – admission is free.

• The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra, celebrating its 75th anniversary, presents “Stirring Celebrations!” The Bemidji Symphony Orchestra anniversary performance will be held at the Sanford Center in Bemidji on Sunday, May 4th.

• The Sixth Annual Fiesta in the Spirit of Cinco de Mayo will be held on Monday, May 5th at the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus – in Kiehle Auditorium at 7 pm. Local artists featured at this year’s event are Tony Diaz and Bryan Sanchez. Diaz is a native Crookston Guitar player and singer.

• On Wednesday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. the Ada-Borup band students, grades 5 through 12 will present their “Spring Concert” at the Ada, Minnesota School. Root Beer floats will be served during a jazz performance with a free will offering to help raise money for a band trip to Disneyworld in 2018.

• The Spring Gala: Optical Illusions at the Plains Art Museum will be held on Saturday evening, May 3rd, from 7 PM to Midnight at the Plains Arts Museum of Moorhead/Fargo. There will also be dancing to Diane Miller and the “Silver Daggers” and the “Carluster Crumplebee Orchestra.”

• The University of North Dakota’s Department of Music presents its 2nd Annual Opera Gala, Friday, May 2nd at the historic Masonic Temple Auditorium in downtown Grand Forks. The cast consists of auditioned UND voice students and UND Voice Faculty with the UND Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Alejandro Drago. The doors open at 7:30 p.m. with performance time at 8 pm Friday evening, May 2nd.

• The Moorhead/Fargo Community Theater presents “The Bikinis” Friday, May 2nd at 7:30 pm, Saturday, May3rd at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 4th at 2:00 pm. All performances are at The Stage at Island Park in Fargo.
