• The popular Minneapolis band, Crankshaft and the Gear Grinders, led by Alex Larson, will perform live at the El Roco Night Club in Grand Forks on Saturday, March 15th at 9:00 pm. The performance is free.

• Marion Blumenthal Lazan will share a first -hand account of her family’s life in Germany from the events preceding Kristallnacht to imprisonment in concentration camps, to liberation in April of 1945. Her presentation will be Wednesday, April 9th at 10 am at the Fisher Public School. The public is welcome to attend. Blumenthal Lazan was 11 years old when her family gained its freedom. Again, her presentation on the Holocaust will be Wednesday, April 9th at 10 am at the Fisher Public School.

• Enjoy Scandinavian Accordion Music with Chuck Gust & Sharon Myron on Sunday, March 16th at the Fire Hall Theater in downtown Grand Forks. The performance begins at 2:00 pm. With a suggested donation of $10.00, The Scandinavian music event is a fundraiser for the Fire Hall’s Brick-by-Brick repair.

• The Drama Department at Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks will present “Little Women” at the Sacred Heart Auditorium. Performances are Friday and Saturday, March 21st and March 22nd at 7:00 pm and Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $10.00 dollars for general admission and $5.00 for students. Advance tickets are available by calling 773-0877.

• The annual Spring Carnival & Slush Cup will be held on Saturday, March 15th at Giants Ridge in Biwabik, Minnesota. Biwabik is located on Minnesota’s Iron Range, northeast of Virginia, Minnesota. The theme for the 2014 festival is “Bears, Bangs and Stashes!” Enjoy outdoor food, music and fun as Biwabik says goodbye to winter, with a bash and a splash.

• The annual Fargo-Moorhead St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 15th on Broadway in downtown Fargo. The parade begins at 2:00 pm this Saturday.

• Minnesota’s Mason Jennings and Iris Dement will perform at the Fargo Theater on Friday, April 4th. Performance time is 8:00 pm. For information, call 701-239-8385.

• An art exhibit titled: Blood Memoirs – Exploring Individuality, Memory, and Culture through Portraits, will be featured on Saturday, March 15th and Sunday March 16th, at the University of Minnesota – Duluth Museum of Art. Native American and guest curator, Amber-Dawn Bear Robe, is the artist and creator of the exhibit.

Arts Calendar

To commemorate the close of the Chinese New Year celebration, the University of Minnesota at Crookston has a full day of events planned – for the Lantern New Year Celebration this Saturday, February 22nd on the UMC campus. Activities begin at 2 pm, to include paper cutting and lantern making, a history of the New Year, Chinese language and writing – and a presentation by the Chinese American Association of Minnesota’s Chinese Dance Theater, performing Saturday evening at 6:30 in Kiehle Auditorium. Tickets for all activities are $15 dollars for adults and $10 dollars for students….this Saturday at the University of Minnesota – Crookston campus.

The Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center is presenting “D3” – Dinner, Dance and Dad on Friday, February 21st from 6 until 10 pm at the Historic Holmes Theater in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. More information can be found online at dlccc.org.
The 13th Annual Musical Variety Show will be held Sunday February 23rd at the American Legion Club in Middle River, Minnesota from 1 until 4pm. The musical event includes entertainment by Joyful Noise, the Popple Ridge Pickers, along with Paul Tandberg and Bruce Elseth.

The East Grand Forks/Grand Forks Master Chorale will present a concert – “Passport to Choral Music” – on Friday, February 21st at 8pm at St. Michael’s Church in Grand Forks. Cost for adults $15 dollars, seniors $10 dollars and students $5 dollars.
A theater performance of “Men are from Mars Women are from Venus” will be held this Sunday, February 23rd at the Empire Arts Center in downtown Grand Forks. Performance time is 7:00pm. The comedy is based on the best-selling book by John Gray and covers everything from dating and marriage to other marital situations.

The “Shadow Box”, winner of the Pulitzer and Tony awards, will be performed at the Burtness Theater on the UND campus, Tuesday, February 25th. For show times, call 701-777-2587.

The “Grumpy Old Men” Festival is being held on Saturday, February 22nd in Wabasha, Minnesota – Wabasha is along the Mississippi River near Red Wing. Scheduled is an Ice fishing contest, ice shacks n’ Plaid Parade, cribbage tournament, bingo, minnow races, 6th Annual Grumpy Plunge and more. Grumpy Old Men is a 1993 American romantic comedy film starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann-Margret, and Burgess Meredith about life and romance in Wabasha.

High school robotics competitions gain popularity

High School teams will pit robot versus robot at the VEX High School Robotics tournament at Northland Community & Technical College – Thief River Falls on Saturday, November 23.
