Pioneer 90.1 and Kezar Music present Twin Cities bluegrass band The High 48s, this Sunday (2/19) at Kezar Music Showroom in Thief River Falls. The show is a fundraiser for Pioneer 90.1. Doors open at 1:00, with music starting at 1:30. Dick Miller and Bob Skoglund will also perform.
In a genre created and dominated by artists from the South, The High 48s were born and raised in the Upper Midwest. In a music scene where playing standards is the norm, The High 48s are a band of songwriters who perform their own material in addition to the “festival favorites.” And in a tradition where most musicians pick their first bluegrass tunes before graduating from Saturday morning cartoons, The High 48s are relative latecomers to bluegrass who found a passion for the music after playing rock, alternative country, indie rock, punk and jazz.
Since arriving on the Minnesota bluegrass scene in 2006, The High 48s have achieved national recognition, taking first place in the prestigious RockyGrass Bluegrass Band Competition in Lyons, CO, (the first band from the Upper Midwest to win the honor), touring the national bluegrass festival circuit and earning the respect of bluegrass musicians and audiences North and South.
There’s a new voice on Pioneer 90.1 Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12 -2. That’s our latest student announcer, Jacob Anderson of Ada.
Jacob is a student in Northland’s New Media program, and he’s interested in a career in radio.

We’re teaming up again this year with our fellow Ampers station, KVSC – St. Cloud State University, to bring you a full weekend of trivia! “33 1/3: Trivia Long Play” honors the 33rd consecutive year of Trivia Weekend and salutes KVSC — the only central Minnesota station still playing vinyl records.
From eight-tracks and cassette tapes to CDs and mp3s, there is only one medium that has stood the test of time: vinyl records. Expect this year’s 50-hour Trivia Weekend marathon to have questions on LPs, 45s and 78RPM records and all the nostalgia that comes with them.
We join KVSC at 6PM Friday (2/10). We’ll take a break for The Saturday Morning Barndance from 7 to 11AM, and join back up for trivia for the rest of the weekend.

Pistons_Plane_Donation_Podcast.mp3 The Thief River Falls Airport had a brush with fame today as a plane that escorted the Detroit Pistons NBA team to the 2004 NBA Championship arrived after its last flight from Detroit Metro Airport. The Pistons donated the DC-9 aircraft, called Roundball One, to the Northland Community & Technical College Foundation to support Northland’s aerospace programs. The DC-9 aircraft served as the Pistons’ team plane from 1998-2010.
Onboard the plane, Northland’s Director of Aviation Programs Biggi Haraldsson said the plane will be kept at Northland’s hangar.
Haraldsson said the the DC-9 is widely used by FedEx and other cargo carriers. Students in Northland’s Aviation Maintenance program will diassemble and reassemble portions of the plane in their lab classes.
Northland president Dr. Anne Temte thanked the Pistons organization for the donation. She said having the aircraft in Northland’s hangar will allow students to get important hands-on experience.
Northland Aerospace includes the aviation maintenance technology and the unmanned aerial systems (UAS) maintenance training programs. The AMT program is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) part 147 approved program. The UAS maintenance training program is the first of its kind in the nation.
