The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) recently awarded their Art Advocate of the Year Award to Jane Vigness of Climax, MN.
Jane is the public librarian at the Lake Agassiz Regional Library branch in Climax and is active in the Sandhill Historical Society as well as the Association of the French of the North (AFRAN). As an AFRAN board member, Jane helps to organize their Chautauqua & French-Canadian Metis Arts Festival near Red Lake Falls, MN in late August. Jane has written about the event, including AFRANS’s newsletters and an article in their book titled “Treaty at Old Crossing To Invite Enlightened Understanding.

This edition of Rasslin Memories is all about the life and career of “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers, who passed away May 16th. George Schire and Glen Braget pay tribute to Doug Somers, from his very early days taking tickets for the AWA at the Calhoun Beach Hotel to his memorable run with Playboy Buddy Rose as tag champs in 1986, working with the Midnight Rockers in some unforgettable mat classics. Though not known for being a top attraction for most of his career, Doug Somers was well respected by his peers and longtime fans and worked many a territory from his debut in 1971 all the way up to his final match in 2012. 19 “Little Shop of Horrors” continues this weekend at the Fire Hall Theater in downtown Grand Forks. Performance time this Friday and Saturday is 7:30 pm. There’s also a 2:00 pm matinee on Sunday.
20 The 1st Annual “Chocolate Walk” in downtown Nisswa, MN.
20 The Minnesota Opera performs “La Boheme” at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in St. Paul. Performance time Saturday is 7:30 pm. A Sunday matinee is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
21 Live Music on the Lawn…. with “The Misadventures “and the 2nd Annual Show ‘n Shine Car Show @Arts on Fifth in Stephen, MN.
21 Anthony Ross, Principal Cello of the Minnesota Orchestra, will be the featured soloist at the Ives Auditorium in Bloomington, MN. Performance time is 3:00 pm.
24 Roseau Elementary School’s Spring Program for Grades 1through 3. Performances are at 10am and 2pm @Roseau School Theater.
27 “Poison & Telsa” will give a concert at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks. More information at 701-792-1420.
