The Northwest Minnesota Arts Council (NWMAC) recently awarded their Art Advocate of the Year Award to Jane Vigness of Climax, MN.
Jane is the public librarian at the Lake Agassiz Regional Library branch in Climax and is active in the Sandhill Historical Society as well as the Association of the French of the North (AFRAN). As an AFRAN board member, Jane helps to organize their Chautauqua & French-Canadian Metis Arts Festival near Red Lake Falls, MN in late August. Jane has written about the event, including AFRANS’s newsletters and an article in their book titled “Treaty at Old Crossing To Invite Enlightened Understanding.

This edition of Rasslin Memories is all about the life and career of “Pretty Boy” Doug Somers, who passed away May 16th. George Schire and Glen Braget pay tribute to Doug Somers, from his very early days taking tickets for the AWA at the Calhoun Beach Hotel to his memorable run with Playboy Buddy Rose as tag champs in 1986, working with the Midnight Rockers in some unforgettable mat classics. Though not known for being a top attraction for most of his career, Doug Somers was well respected by his peers and longtime fans and worked many a territory from his debut in 1971 all the way up to his final match in 2012.
